Artist Statement

Cristina Negrette is a multidisciplinary fine artist from Gibraltar whose practice explores the relationship between drawing and sculpture through play, materiality and memory. Working across sculpture and installation, she creates tactile and visually engaging works that blur the boundaries between two and three dimensions, questioning where drawing ends and sculpture begins.

Inspired by childhood scribbles, her work investigates the expressive potential of line as a physical form. Using salvaged industrial materials as a means of drawing in space, she explores the relationships between line, form, surface, material and the spaces they occupy. Through processes of collecting, manipulating and assembling reclaimed materials, she transforms discarded objects into sculptural compositions that retain traces of their previous lives whilst taking on new meanings.

Central to Cristina's practice is the emotional and physical connection between material and memory. The familiarity of salvaged, recognisable materials evokes personal and collective experiences, encouraging viewers to recall forgotten moments and reflect on their own relationship with the past. Through playful experimentation and an intuitive approach to making, her work invites audiences to engage with material in unexpected ways, creating spaces where nostalgia, curiosity and imagination intersect.
